Avast is a great choice for a free anti virus solution for home non-comercial use only. It also comes with anti-spyware & anti-rootkit protection as well.
I'm still a big fan of FreeAV because it works so well and doesn't take up too many resources. FreeAV doesn't include the anti-rootkit and anti-spyware features. I handle these myself with products that focus only on revealing rootkits and anti-spyware.
